Event #1 Champion, David McElroy

The first event of this year’s Southern Poker Championship amassed a field of 379 players. This field brought in a total prize pool of  $107,057 with the top prize of $28,994 going to first place. This two-day event ended day 1 with only 12 players remaining and those players would pick up the action pretty quickly on day 2. The final table was determined in just 20 minutes of play on Day 2, and the action never slowed down.

The final table’s first victim was Chris Brauch, from Tallahassee, Fla. All the money got in pre-flop, and Chris Brauch held Q’s versus the A-K of David McElroy. Flop was 7s-9c-2s. The turn was the Js for the possible 4 flush and the river was the Kd. Brauch ended his day earning $1,503 for his 10th place finish.

Troy Lee made a raise to $40k and action got over to John Cofhlin, who moved all-in. Lee only had to call $28k more and did so with 8-3 for the obvious steal. John’s pocket 7′s looked good on the flop and turn, but the river 8 sent him packing in 9th place, earning $1,933.

Our 8th place finisher was Donald Crabtree, who got all of his money in pre-flop holding pocket 10’s versus the K-J of Troy Lee. The flop was 7-3-2, which kept the 10’s in the lead. However, the turn was a J and the river was a 4. Donald exited the tournament area earning $3,007 for his efforts.

Keith Richeson and Ryan Gentry saw a flop of 10s-As-7d. The two players placed a flurry of bets, which resulted in Keith being all-in with the spade draw and a gutshot (6-8s). Gentry held the 10-8 for the lead. The turn was a Qc and the river was the 7c. Keith Richeson was finished in 7th place, earning $4,080.

Ryan Gentry called the raise in the BB of $50k from David McElroy. The flop was 8-7-7 and Gentry only had $3k behind and put the rest in. He saw the bad news that McElroy had flopped a pair of 8′s with his 10-8 in the hole. The turn and river were blanks and Ryan was sent home in 6th place, earning $5,154.

With 5 players remaining, two players would limp in. The small blind completed and Troy Lee checked his option in the big blind. The flop was J-4-3, and he and Steven Curtin got all the chips in the middle. Troy had J-8, while Steven held J-10. The turn was a 7 and the river was a 2, sending Troy Lee out in 5th earning $6,228.

Under the gun and only holding 3 big blinds, Jim Petzing put his chips in and got called by David McElroy and Steven Curtin. The two live players checked down a board of K-Q-Q-K-4. Petzing held pocket 7′s, which amounted to only a high card and Curtin tabled a 10 for the winning hand. Jim Petzing finished in 4th place, earning $7,302.

Ronald Crabtree, brother of 8th place finisher Donald Crabtree, had to take his stand with A-6 versus the K-6 of David McElroy. The flop was 4-10-9, keeping Donald ahead. But the turn was a K and the river was a J. Ronald finished 3rd earning $9,449.

The heads-up battle started with Steven Curtin holding a near 3-to-1 advantage over David McElroy. After 30 minutes of battle, however, McElroy was holding a slight advantage when the bust-out hand occurred. The two players got all the money in on a flop of 9d-10c-8d with McElroy holding J-10 and Curtin holding the J-6d. The turn was the 8h and the river was the Ah. Steven Curtin finished in 2nd place.

Our champion is David McElroy from Pass Christian, Miss. He takes home the beautiful trophy and $28,994.
