On Friday August 29th, the 2014 Gulf Coast Poker Championship kicked off at noon, and when registration closed, 82 players had ponied up the $1,600 entry fee to take a shot at the $300,000 guaranteed prize pool.  When play concluded for Day 1A, only 16 players remained.  The following day, 162 players joined the fray at  2 separate starting  times and battled it out over the felt.  When the smoke cleared for Day 1B and 1C, a goal of 50 players remained to play it out for the $355,020 prize pool. Steven Rash was the chip leader at the end of Day 1, with over 270,000 in chips.

Steven was unable to push the chip lead into a victory, but still scored a nice finish, and pocketed $3,550 for a 23rd place finish.  The 50 remaining players were eventually whittled down to 9 survivors who would advance to the final table on Monday, September 1st at 2:00PM.   “Captain” Tom Franklin from Gulfport, MS was among the local players who cashed in the event, netting $4,615 for his 16th place finish.

Carl McGowan from Pearson, GA had a commanding chip lead when the final table began, with 1,002,000 of the 3,679,000 chips in play, or 27% of the chips with 9 players remaining.  On a couple of occasions, the chip lead changed hands, but Carl battled his down to the final 3, and was eventually named the champion of the event.  For his efforts, Carl won $86,981.  The Beau Rivage also provided Carl with a Movado Sport 900 series watch to commemorate his victory.
